US tool reference

This page documents the four US tools on the Commerce for Agents MCP server for agent platforms and reviewers. All four are read-only comparisons: they change no data, create no account, place no order and charge nothing. Results link to the provider's own page, where the user decides and buys.

Endpoint and setup

https://mcp.commerceforagents.com/mcp/us

MCP over Streamable HTTP. No authentication, no API key, no account, so there are no scopes or test credentials. The endpoint lists only the four tools below; the full server at /mcp also carries German energy tools. Setup for ChatGPT and Claude is on the connect page.

compare-broadband

Home internet providers at a US address, with technology, maximum advertised speeds and provider starting prices.

address: US street address with city and state or ZIP. Or lat and lon.
minDownloadMbps (optional): minimum advertised download speed.
technology (optional): any of fiber, cable, dsl, fixed_wireless, satellite, other.

Returns providers ranked by low latency, then speed, from the FCC Broadband Data Collection for the census block. Where we have one, a starting price with plan, conditions, source URL and check date. The address is sent to the US Census Bureau Geocoder to find the census block. It is not stored, logged or included in analytics.

Errors: no geocoder match for the address (the agent is asked to confirm it or use coordinates the user gives); no FCC data for the area; missing input.

compare-mobile-plans

US cell phone plans priced for 1 to 6 lines.

lines (1–6, default 1), data_need (light, moderate, heavy, unlimited), budget_per_line (USD), prepaid_or_postpaid, must_haves (hotspot, 5g, premium_data, unlimited_data), preferred_network.

Returns plans ranked by monthly cost for the requested lines, with network, data, conditions (autopay, paid upfront, taxes), source URL and check date.

compare-vpn

VPN plans ranked by effective monthly cost.

min_devices, needs (streaming, p2p), country (two-letter code; prices are US prices in USD), checkout (default false: pricing-page links; true: plan-preselected checkout links).

Returns term, upfront charge, renewal price where published, devices and features, with source and check date.

compare-esims

Travel eSIM packages for a destination and trip.

destination (ISO 3166-1 alpha-2, 18 destinations), days (1–365), data_gb, unlimited, providers.

Returns packages that last the trip with enough data, ranked by price, with coverage, validity and list price before tax.

Errors: unsupported destination (the supported list is returned).

Prices, ranking and commercial relationships

Prices come from each provider's own page, are dated in every result and are dropped after 45 days. Ranking uses price, or latency and speed for broadband, only. Some result links are affiliate links that may earn us a commission. They never change the order, and every response that contains one says so. See how we compare.

Limits and status

No per-client rate limit is enforced. Broadband lookups take about one second because they call the Census geocoder; the other tools answer in milliseconds.
Invalid inputs return a JSON-RPC validation error naming the field. Tool-level failures return isError: true with a plain-language reason and what to ask the user.
Responses are stateless: retrying a call is safe and gives the same result for the same catalog date.
